This website is sponsored and maintained by the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc. (IBH). Over the past years, the United States has made impressive progress in the fight against illegal drugs: Since 1979, the number of drug users has dropped from a high of 25 million users in 1979 to the current level of 19.5 million. These figures show that anti-drug efforts do make a difference. However, the level of substance abuse remains unacceptably high.
IBH views the fight against drugged driving as a significant part of the overall national effort to reduce drug use, and an important way to make the roads safer for everyone who travels on them. While drunk driving rates are generally in decline, drugged driving is only beginning to be recognized as a major threat to highway safety. A new focus on drugged driving builds on and enhances the successful efforts that have been made in the previous three decades to reduce drunk driving.
Reducing drugged driving is a vital part of U.S. efforts to reduce the demand for illegal drugs. The money from American drug users now fuels deadly domestic and international drug trafficking. Reducing that demand is the key to building a better drug policy for our country.
IBH seeks to partner with drunk driving initiatives to build stronger policies and programs that will help achieve three vital public health and public safety goals: making roadways safer, reducing excessive drinking and illegal drug use, and helping people with substance abuse problems get the help they need to become drug-free.
IBH promotes both national and international policies that reduce illegal drug use and the problems that use creates. Non-partisan and non-political, IBH serves as a catalyst for change by promoting cooperation among government agencies, non-profits, research institutions and grassroots community groups. Established in 1978, IBH is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that works to reduce substance abuse through the power of good ideas.
